IIT Ropar Inaugurates 17th Cyber-Physical Systems Lab in Jammu under NM-ICPS

Jammu & Kashmir Joins India’s Deep-Tech Grid: IIT Ropar Launches First CPS Lab in J&K at MIET, Jammu

Innovation has reached the Himalayas. On 25 September 2025, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar – Technology and Innovation Foundation, iHub AWaDH, inaugurated its 17th Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) Laboratory at the Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET), Jammu. This marks a historic milestone — the first-ever CPS Lab in Jammu & Kashmir under the Government of India’s National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), Department of Science & Technology (DST). A Landmark for Deep-Tech in J&K The establishment of this CPS Lab extends the nationwide CPS Lab network to the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, bringing deep-tech research, skilling, and innovation infrastructure closer to students, researchers, and entrepreneurs in the region.

The CPS Lab at MIET will:
Empower talent with hands-on experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS).
Accelerate Industry 4.0 adoption by preparing a highly skilled workforce aligned with India’s global technology ambitions.
Democratize innovation by creating entrepreneurial opportunities in deep-tech sectors across J&K.

Leadership & Vision
The inauguration was graced by academic and institutional leaders:
Prof. Ankur Gupta, Director, MIET Jammu
Prof. Sahil Sawhney, Dean Strategy & QA, MIET
Prof. Devanand Padha, Dean Academic Affairs, MIET
Dr. Surbhi Sharma, HOD (ECE), MIET
Dr. Mukesh Kestwal, PhD, Chief Innovation Officer, iHub AWaDH @ IIT Ropar (Chief Guest)

Delivering the keynote, Dr. Mukesh Kestwal inspired the audience with a thought-provoking message:
“Curiosity isn’t random; it’s a compass — one that takes you closer to success. Success isn’t accidental, while opportunities are. The best ideas often start as side projects: something that annoys you, something you can build, something your friend would want — and that’s how billion-dollar ventures are born.”

State-of-the-Art Facilities
The CPS Lab is equipped with:
Advanced IoT kits, AI/ML workstations, Smart sensors & prototyping tools.
The lab is designed to provide 24/7 plug-and-play access, enabling students, faculty, and innovators to learn, experiment, and build solutions for real-world challenges.

A Launchpad for J&K’s Innovation Ecosystem
More than just a laboratory, this facility is envisioned as a launchpad for bold ideas and a catalyst for the deep-tech startup ecosystem in Jammu & Kashmir. It reinforces IIT Ropar iHub AWaDH’s mission to take deep-tech innovation beyond metropolitan hubs and into every corner of India, ensuring that regions like J&K are not left behind in the nation’s technological growth story.
